Announcing: The Bookmark Box for Ukraine

We wanted to take this opportunity to tell you about Bookmark’s emergency appeal in response to the Ukrainian crisis.  

Two million children have fled Ukraine already and 100,000 will arrive in the UK having left their loved ones, education, and home behind. These children now need to start a new life whilst healing from trauma.  

At Bookmark, we want to help these children start their new chapter in the UK feeling secure, welcome and inspired. We have therefore created the Bookmark Box for Ukraine. 

With the help of literacy experts, we have curated a Bookmark Box for these children filled with literacy and language resources as well as tools to support their wellbeing, personal and social development. 

We’re hoping to raise £1 million to deliver 5,000 Bookmark Boxes. We’d appreciate any support you might be able to give to help as many Ukrainian child refugees turn the first page of their new chapter with their own Bookmark Box. 

Why is the box so important? 

Research shows that children who read and write in their spare time have better mental health than their peers (NLT). By supporting a child from Ukraine when they arrive in the UK, you could help them to process their experiences through storytelling and therapeutic play. 

Our aim is to help these children feel comfortable and connected to their homes despite their new surroundings, but also start to build their familiarity with the English language so they can communicate in this new world. 

What's in the box? 

A tablet loaded with books in multiple languages, apps such as ChatterStars and mobile data allowance to stay in touch with loved ones displaced around the world.  

The box will also include books in Ukrainian and English, stationery sets, colouring in activities, worksheets, sensory games like playdough and more. It will be illustrated with an exclusive Squibbles colouring sheet so that the children can make it their own. At a time when these children have left so much behind, this box will be their very own to keep forever.
