How are children on the Bookmark programme safeguarded?
We ask for a lot of information when you apply to volunteer with us because you will be working one-to-one with children. Bookmark is absolutely committed to safeguarding and promoting the well-being and welfare of children, and all others who come into contact with the Charity.
We require all individuals who are involved or associated with the Charity – including trustees, employees and volunteers – to share this commitment. We are committed to ensuring our safeguarding policies, procedures and practice are in line with guidance and to safer recruitment selection, vetting and other background checks.
Do you have a concern about a child’s safety or wellbeing?
If you are worried for any reason, please call us on 0203 995 7970 or email our monitored safeguarding inbox: Safeguarding@BookmarkReading.org
Frequently asked questions

Whether you're an employee or a volunteer, everyone at Bookmark is responsible for the wellbeing and welfare of the children we come in contact with. We've outlined the process here to help you know the steps you need to take, in the event of a safeguarding concern: https://bookmarklibrary.looop.co/topic/170399
However, the main priority is the get in touch - no matter how big or small you think your concern may be. The Designated Safeguarding Lead (and deputies) are here to give you clear guidance and support on what you should do next. You can contact Bookmark's DSL team on 020 3995 7970.

Yes! You will have completed all Bookmark training, including safeguarding, before you can volunteer online or go into schools.

Unfortunately, we are unable to offer our volunteer opportunities to anyone who is living either temporarily or permanently overseas as it makes our safeguarding practices very hard to implement.
If you are currently overseas, we kindly ask that you don’t start your application until you are living in the UK.
