What does the one-to-one reading programme involve?

During each programme, you will have one-to-one reading sessions with a child for 30 minutes, twice a week for six weeks*. The child you volunteer with will be in school but you will volunteer online through our secure, interactive platform. In some areas you may also be able to volunteer through our face to face programme in a school.

Each 30-minute reading session is structured to include reading, games and activities and designed to be fully interactive, fun and engaging.

*Ensure you’re able to commit to two 30-minute sessions per week for six consecutive weeks, along with a commitment to participate in at least three programmes a year.

The research behind our programme

In December 2020, Bookmark commissioned the National Literacy Trust to review both our face-to-face and online reading programmes against the evidence base regarding effective literacy interventions for primary school.

They found that Bookmark’s reading programmes are well designed and align well with existing evidence. The table below summarises these findings, and the full report is available here.
