The power of libraries: celebrating World Book Day 2025

  • Published: 27/02/2025

Libraries play an important role in helping young people discover a lifelong love of reading. Not only do they provide services that can help people learn, connect and grow, but they also provide access to a wide range of books and resources, that can spark curiosity in young minds.

World Book Day is a special time for libraries. As a global celebration of books, authors and the joy of reading, many libraries host exciting events that bring communities together and encourage children to explore the magical world of books.

We spoke with Chartered Librarian and Bookmark volunteer, Ann Day – who has worked in public libraries across Yorkshire and Humberside for over fifty years, about the importance of libraries and how they’re celebrating this World Book Day.

Why libraries are so important

Libraries are at the heart of communities, championing literacy, lifelong learning and cultural engagement. Not only are they amazing places that welcome everyone, but they also offer fun and free initiatives for people of all ages, like story times, reading challenges and book clubs.

Here’s why libraries remain essential:
  • Libraries have lots to offer children including an exciting and diverse collection of reading materials they can take home and enjoy. With one in eight children aged five-to-eight, lacking a book of their own, libraries ensure access to a wide range of reading materials for all children – helping to bridge the gap for those who might not have access to books at home.
  • Libraries are free to join, free to use and some no longer charge fines for overdue books, which means everyone can access information regardless of income. They provide access to trusted, reliable sources of knowledge and can be essential hubs of academic resources and archives.
  • They champion local history, literature and the arts through creative events like exhibitions, festivals, author talks and creative workshops.
  • Libraries encourage environmental sustainability by promoting shared resources.
