Our Vision, Mission and Values

Our vision is simple: we want every child to read.

We improve children’s literacy by promoting a reading for pleasure culture in primary schools, with a focus on supporting children in the most disadvantaged communities.

Three students are looking at books on a school library shelving unit. The student on the left is a girl with long blonde/brown hair and is wearing glasses and smiling. A boy in the middle with light coloured hair as a book open and a younger student with their hair tied up is on the far right looking at the books on the shelf.

We want every child to read

Bookmark started in 2018 with a simple vision: we want every child to read. We partner with schools to encourage a reading for pleasure culture, prioritising the needs of children in disadvantaged communities who face the greatest barriers.

Our Chair and Founder, Sharon Pindar, was inspired by her own experiences to set up the charity.

Our impact

At Bookmark, we focus on children in disadvantaged communities, where our support is needed the most. Our initiatives are designed to make a significant difference in their lives.

Our one-to-one reading programme has supported thousands of children, boosting their reading skills, confidence and motivation. By partnering with schools, we enrich libraries with diverse books and foster a strong whole school reading culture, significantly improving reading attainment and transforming educational outcomes.

Our purpose

More than seven million adults in England struggle to read and face challenges every day – at home, on the move, in the workplace and with their friends and families.

We want to stop this trend. We want every child to read.
