Your Story Corner Programme: Sheffield

Why are we there?

Bookmark aimed to help primary schools across Sheffield to develop a whole school reading culture, encouraging reading for pleasure, and helping to tackle the number of children leaving primary school unable to read well.

What did we do?

Bookmark Reading Charity has donated over £100,000 worth of new books to 116 state-funded primary schools in the region.

What did we deliver?

  • 116

schools received Your Story Corner packs

  • £23,200

    worth of books donated

  • 232,000

    books donated

What was our impact?

The reading spaces in the area improved, offering more options and a wider variety of books.

There was a 20% increase in the number of children reporting they used the school reading space in the last seven days. This is the highest we have seen in any region.

Thanks to support from Bookmark, 90% of teachers were motivated to improve their school’s reading activities, reading spaces, or the overall reading culture in their school.

  • 100%

of teachers said the project made a positive difference to enjoyment of reading

  • 96%

of teachers said the project made a positive difference to children’s motivation

  • 15%

increase in children saying they enjoy reading

The books were largely placed in a Y5 classroom and the buzz around the books from both staff and children was incredible to see. Children are not wanting to put their books down. We let the children in this class have first pick and they were recommending, discussing and excitedly speaking about books with each other. We can't believe the quality of the books and the range of new titles. There are also lots of books which will support our curriculum. The wide range and diversity supports our ethos - we couldn't be happier! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!

The children have enjoyed accessing a variety of books. Children have developed empathy towards others as some of the books have enabled children to make links with children in their class and have helped them understand how children behave a certain way. Children enjoy seeing the diverse characters in the stories. The new books have inspired some of our reluctant readers.
